With it’s coastal setting, farmland all around and hills behind rising to nearly 700 feet within half a mile of the cottages, it is not surprising that this area is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a World Heritage Site. Matthew Cottage is right in the middle of this amazingly peaceful, atmospheric location - “away from it all” - with excellent fishing and walking immediately from your door along the Chesil Beach itself, the Coastal Path, or in the hills and picturesque villages inland. You will be spoilt for choice with many attractions within easy reach, excellent eating out and amazing fresh produce available locally.
This is Thomas Hardy’s Dorset - famous for its scenery and historic villages - one of which is the close-by village of Abbotsbury – well worth exploring with it’s fourteenth century St. Nicolas’ Church, remains of a Benedictine Abbey, galleries, shops and tea rooms – and home to the famous Abbotsbury Swannery, the Sub-Tropical Gardens and the Children’s Farm at the Tithe Barn. Also within easy reach is the county town of Dorchester, the resort and port of Weymouth & Portland (chosen to host the sailing olympics in 2012) and the bustling market town of Bridport. The award winning X53 bus route between Poole and Exeter offers a unique means of seeing the area without having to drive.
Matthew Cottage has become a favourite with couples, families and friends over many years. Please see our website for details.

The kitchen is of a galley layout with amazing and ever changing views eastwards across fields and the sea towards the Fleet and Portland and access via the front door to the Quarterdeck at the front of the cottage. Originally it was the laundry serving all the cottages when they were still in use as coastguards. It is well lit, has plenty of good working surfaces and storage, and is well equipped with a fridge/freezer, electric double fan-assisted cooker with grill, toaster, electric kettle, microwave, crockery, cooking utensils, cutlery, tea cloths, dish cloth, duster, dust pan and brush: this is a four-star cottage after all!
There is a characterful, carpeted dining room with direct access to the kitchen via a wide doorway and large serving hatch, and views across the quarterdeck and gardens to the sea.
The carpeted, separate lounge has a stone open fireplace and quarry tiled hearth, comfortable upholstered furniture, a television with integral video, a plentiful and varied supply of books and similar views across the gardens to the sea.
A plan of the layout of all the rooms in the cottage may be seen on our website.
Leading off the dining room, the hallway to the rear of the cottage leads to the downstair bathroom and the single bedroom. A laundry with washing machine, spin and tumble dryer is in a separate service building to the rear of the cottage. A payphone for outgoing calls is located in the same building: also various games for use by guests such as croquet, boules, hand dumbells and children's games |
