The Pennine Way passes through the village and the surrounding area of outstanding natural beauty provides for numerous delightful walks. Most popular are the walks to the spectacular waterfalls of Low Force, High Force (England`s largest), and Couldron Snout.
Local attractions include the historic market towns of Barnard Castle and Richmond, the famous Bowes Museum and Raby Castle. Hamsterley Forest offers mountain bike trails and hire, picnic areas, tearooms and nature trails through beautiful woodland.
The central location makes for easy day trips to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, The North York Moors, Hadrians Wall and Durham with its iconic castle and cathedral.
