Hush Cottage is in Middleton in Teesdale, a small market town which is 9 miles from the ancient picturesque town of Barnard Castle in the heart of the high Pennines.
Middleton has an excellent range of shops where you can buy all your groceries and there are many good eating places in the town and adjacent villages. The town is in the heart of Teesdale and is surrounded by high moors and hills. Many walks can be started from the cottage ranging from the very short to the more demanding. The latter require stout footwear, an OS map and the usual safety precautions. Lead mining has long disappeared from the area but striking memorials to a once-thriving industry can be seen in the countryside and towns including the hushes from where surface ore was mined. Secure storage for bicycles enables keen cyclists to use the Durham Cycle Way.
The whole area is of great interest to the bird-watcher, geologist, angler, cyclist and botanist; the meadows of Teesdale in the summer are a delight, but if you wish to travel further afield the whole of the Land of the Prince Bishops is within striking distance. Durham City, Beamish Museum the old fishing villages of the Northumberland Coast, the Farne Islands, the Eden Valley and Hadrian's Wall could each be the basis for a memorable day out. There is a Tourist Information Office in the town but the cottage is well supplied with pamphlets and books.
