The stunning areas are just a short drive from the Cottage which include the haunting beauty of Glencoe and Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. For a day out to Ardnamurchan, which is the most westerly point on the British mainland, can be reached by taking the Corran Ferry, just one mile north from the cottage. In Fort William, the Outdoor Capital of the UK, is a large supermarket and a full range of shops to cater for all your holiday needs. There is much to see and do in Fort William. For those interested in castles, at the turn-off to the A830 Road to the Isles there are the ruins of old Inverlochy Castle, which played a part in the Civil War of 1642. If you are interested in taking a loch cruise, there is the choice of Crannog Cruises from the pier in Fort William, which cruise down Loch Linnhe to Seal Island, or alternatively there are Loch Shiel Cruises based in Glenfinnan, some 15 miles along the A830 Road to the Isles. Here you can also see the National Trust Visitor Centre and Bonnie Prince Charlie Monument, as well as the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct (now of Harry Potter fame!). Or just have a coffee at the cafe. Activities nearby include the Nevis Range cable car to take you up the mountain of Aonach Mor, offering excellent winter ski-ing and summer downhill mountain biking, the Ice Factor Mountain Activity Centre in Kinlochleven - the biggest indoor ice climbing facility in the world, and our local 9-hole golf course, the Dragon's Tooth, in Ballachulish.
