Enjoy a relaxing stay in this charming former watermill, nestling amongst the undulating landscape of East Northamptonshire. The present owners, Anne and Andy restored the building, which was just an empty shell, in 2007 into the luxury accommodation it is today.

The Old Watermill is a well-known and interesting landmark situated on the banks of the River Nene in the lovely valley below the village of Great Doddington. Mentioned in the Domesday book (C.1086), the ancient mill has ground flour from grain for over 1000 years.

After the Norman conquest of 1066, it was given by William the Conqueror to his niece Judith, who was related to the Marquis of Northampton. It was a working mill until 1919 and decommissioned after World War II, when the Nene Commissioners extinguished the milling rights and removed the machinery. According to local legend, the mill became a brief hiding place for Thomas 'a Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was imprisoned in Northampton Castle. He succeeded in escaping its' walls and fled down river to be sheltered by the Miller before fleeing to France in 1164.

There's lots to do here to interest the historian, walker, artist, photographer, nature lover or plenty of time to just relax and take things quietly. Our many traditional pubs offer fine food and drink, while in the town there are theatres, sports and leisure facilities and many other entertainments.
